Getting ready to build our own landfills
Another day at Friday CONNECTIONS! playing with rocks, dirt, worms and more!
Because sustainability starts with ourselves, the morning started with a review about our eating choices the day before and how we could possibly choose differently in the future. Our discussion reinforced what we learned from Dr William Sears, MD book, “Eating Healthy, Feel Great.”
As we moved away from our own bodies and eating habits, we revisited our discussion about what sustainability means and the 4 Rs
- Reuse
- Reduce
- Recycle
- Rethink!
Photos and discussion around marine and land pollution transitioned our class into talking about landfills. Talking is all good, but action speaks louder than words. So we took the students outside and picked up rocks and bits of trash, gathered our snack scraps and let the worms out…yep, those hearty “compost” worms.
Groups of students put it all together to let the worms do their thing for the next 2 weeks. The kids (and me) can’t wait to see what will happen when we come back on our next furlough Friday…November 20th!

One of the many activities the children enjoyed on their first day at Friday CONNECTIONS!
Fun and ENGAGED…you bet ya!
The first day at Friday CONNECTIONS! was full of activity, learning and FUN!
To kick off our sustainability theme, we started with the children’s own bodies. As you can see from the two new “students” hanging on the wall, we started with understanding how to sustain our own bodies. This activity was one of many that day to expose the ”real” students to interesting opportunities in the upcoming classes!
Our students began their morning with meeting each other and learning about what each likes. An introduction to our Kindness Tree and how being kind is a choice.
Next, a short discussion about their brains and how it develops. Yes, we introduced basic brain vocabulary and the associated behaviors; brain stem, limbic system and frontal lobe.
Friday CONNECTIONS! is focused on developing our student’s frontal lobes or “thinking” part of their brain. We do it through creating a safe place for them to explore and create.
We also feel the adult/child connection is extremely important to building a nurturing environment for our students. This allows them to not only know their value to themselves and their team mates, but also allows them to “feel” their connection to those around them.
It’s definitely a team effort…director, teacher and students!

The response has been overwhelming and the kids really enjoyed their first Friday together! The kids learned all about themselves to include the brain, and all their internal organs. Large images of their traced bodies hung from the chalk board with their brains to intestines colored and labeled. They even got to learn about the different parts of “blood”….eeeehhhh!
Actually it was pretty neat to see a 6 year old talk about the plasma and blood cells…even neater was to actually see the different blood cells floating in the “blood”. Yep, as we promised, CONNECTIONS! is all about engaging, hands-on experiences.
Sign up now and your child can start to join the fun on October 30!
